'@StevePollackCEO Year of Books: "A Dangerous Man" by Robert Crais

Back to Blog

I discovered crime novelist Robert Crais from his first book The Monkey’s Raincoat, and he has since been one of my must-read authors.

A Dangerous Man is Crais’ 22nd novel, most of which feature private detective Elvis Cole, a wise and wisecracking ex-ranger who thrives on putting bad guys in their place.

This time Crais’ main protagonist is Cole’s back-up strongman, Joe Pike, a gruff, but good-hearted ex-marine who’s left a trail of dead bad guys behind him.

A Dangerous Man begins at a bank in Los Angeles where Pike is a regular customer. It’s not really any of his business when he witnesses bank teller Izzy Roland being shoved into an SUV with some shady characters, but he makes it his business–and makes sure her kidnappers get what they deserve. When it turns out those bad guys were just pawns in a much bigger game, Pike and Cole fight to keep Izzy alive and to figure out what secrets she’s hiding that have made them all targets.

A Dangerous Man was a fun read and an intriguing tale told in vivid detail--with a number of L.A. landmarks and landscapes included.
